Why learn it? People come to the Alexander Technique for many reasons, including pain, injury rehabilitation, acting/sport performance improvement or just with the sense that they feel that something isn't quite right with the way their bodies feel and want to explore a different way of movement.
Whatever reason a person has, the Alexander Technique uses its basic principles to allow them to re-educate their natural sensory awareness, which is thrown by habitual tension patterns, and to find a more natural and freer way of moving.
The Alexander Technique allows you to regain more conscious control of the process of movement and living, enabling you to become less of a slave to your old habits. With this improved awareness comes a more focused and immediate sense of what is happening around you , and the ability you have to react to it, or not, as the case may be.
Through this ability to choose how you react to stimulus many seemingly unrelated pains and ailments can be eased or eliminated altogether. The return of the bodies natural ability to expand against gravity and move in balance allows pressure on the joints to be eased and the muscles to work less hard for more return.
Anyone can benefit from the Alexander Technique; it is a skill for living that can underpin all other activities that you do, allowing you to enjoy life more in whatever you do.
